I am pleased to announce that Philip E. Bourne has been appointed to the position of Associate Vice Chancellor - Innovation and Industry Alliances, effective July 1, 2012. Professor Bourne is joining the leadership team of the Office of Research Affairs, assisting the campus in promoting research entrepreneurship and broadening campus participation in innovation. Professor Bourne will work to foster productive, strategic relationships and alliances with the private sector; identifying new research opportunities that will permit UCSD to continue to thrive in an evolving research funding environment.
Professor Bourne joined UC San Diego's Supercomputer Center in 1995, after many years with internationally renowned institutions such as Columbia University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He was appointed Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2000, and is a longtime Associate Director of the Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics Protein Data Bank. In addition to his extensive research, Professor Bourne has started four companies, two of them while at UCSD - Protein Vision Inc. and SciVee Inc. He co-founded and remains the inaugural Editor in Chief of the open access journal PLoS Computational Biology which, in just six years, has risen to first place in impact in its field.
Professor Bourne's extensive experience and demonstrated commitment to entrepreneurial activities both on campus and outside UCSD, his distinguished record of teaching and research, his significant experience and understanding of intellectual property, research contracts and industry provides him with an exceptional background for this position.
